Flow of a river on a downstream trend is always downwards. A liquid that is going to flow down a high-rise platform, can easily be determined by a nowise as to in which direction it is going to flow.
Flow of a stream on a flat land surface cannot be determined, it may need some good understanding of the lay of the land.
