The Shorters who bought the around 1 Billion shares yesterday had borrowed the shares from the registered owner for the express purpose of using these shares for a shorting strategy. They would have made a substantial profit in so doing. In fact they actually made an extra A$12m on buying the shares from PLL calculated as follows: (SYA opening price $0.064 - PLL sell price A$0.052) x 1 Billion shares. Not bad for a day's work!
The registered holders of these shares are now being forced to sell because of SYA's exit from MCSI and probably ASX200 . They are the ones who are now losing the money.
