While it's a positive initiative, it's just a strategy, to be candid, is strategies are more high-level concepts and frameworks on paper "thought bubbles" far from a real plan. To proceed it necessitates substantial financial backing, a challenging feat given the current lithium pricing does not present a lucrative enough opportunity for deep-pocketed institutional investors to offset the risk.
Only then comes detailed planning and execution; navigating the not-so-"easy" road to obtaining approvals from an endless variety of Canadian governmental departments, making infrastructure modifications, and actually building and commissioning the plant. So, while it's an appealing concept, it's far from "shovel-ready," aligning more with 2030 than 2026.
That being said, given the growing need, political support (what happens if/when government changes), and the existence of commercial technology, it does hold merit.

In contrast, what will China do? Expanding existing lithium processing plants is easier than creating new ones. Chy-na is also on an EV building growth curve that mirrors Japan's ICE manufacturing success in the 70s-80s. Its growing and it's not stopping anytime in the next decade. I also believe that home battery storage systems at 1/3 of the current price would be a game-changer. I balked at a home battery storage system at $10k, but I wouldn't have at $4k.
