I am following the transit of General cargo ship TAAGBORG which has just departed Port of Quebec for Zenhjiang, China, ETA 10 July.
Going by the ETA and class of vessel, it will almost certainly be going via the Panama Canal.
This is not the first of our loads to go to Zhenjiang, which is also a port that loads from PLS are frequently sent.
There are a number of refineries near that port.
I am not sure if this ship’s load is from PLL’s allocation or is one from SYAQ.
We will continue to see shipments going to China until such time as an alternative is found.
Water levels in the Panama Canal are improving so it is possible this load is bigger than those that were despatched at the end of last year and earlier this year.
It is possible that some spod from NAL will be sent across the border by rail for Tesla but I am assuming they will be small.
Something that may occur, is that the US government may give support for a strategic reserve of critical minerals.
If that was to occur, NAL would be front and centre as the only source of spodumene concentrate in North America able to provide the volume of product to make such a scheme worthwhile.
