It is worth listening to this podcast to find out more about lithium as a specialty chemical that has some of the elements of a commodity in how it is traded.

For instance, lithium hydroxide is a speciality chemical whose customer base is relatively small. The requirement for qualification are very demanding, more so than they are for lithium carbonate or spodumene.

This is borne out by the price discovery exercise that Albemarle has been doing this year.

They have conducted 19 events where customers can bid for spodumene or lithium carbonate, presumably because the customer base is larger and more diverse.

Lithium hydroxide has not been put to auction.

Katie stated there are three times as many participants in the auctions than when they first started at the beginning of the year.

When asked if any of the successful bidders were non- she said yes there was.
