And there is a good answer for that. Most drivers, and especially here in America, like the idea that they could go on a long road trip, somewhere fun, anytime. That's the notion of "freedom" that they like to have and their vehicle represents that for them.
It's more the thought that they "could" which supplies the fun for most people, than the actual fact of doing so.
