What product would we sell to Ford?
According to everything I have read we will not produce hydroxide or carbonate until 2025. The few announcements that we have received and the interviews conducted with KP all say the same thing... we will start producing spodumene in 2023 and then become a hydroxide producer in 2025.
The list of people who we can sell spodumene to would be anyone who has a way to convert it into either carbonate or hydroxide. So who has hydroxide refining capabilities?
1. China - most of the worlds hydroxide and carbonate are done in China
2. USA
- Albemarle - they have a chemical processing facility in North Carolina - today they produce very little
- Livent - Livent also has a chemical processing facility in North Carolina - they have a plan to add 5000 tones additional to their production which will bring them up to 15,000 tones.
- Tesla - Tesla is building a hydroxide plant next to giga-Texas
https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-lithium-hydroxide-facility-cybertruck-gigafactory-texas/So starting in 2023 we will be producing somewhere between 225,000 and 250,000 tones of spodumene. 50% of that will be going to Piedmont and since they will not have a processing facility in 2023, they will likely have Sayona ship it directly to one of the facilities above. Since they have an agreement with Tesla, I am going to go out on a limb and say it will be going directly to giga-Texas to be converted into Hydroxidie.
Ok so what about the other 125,000 tones?
Livent will be at capacity and so will Albemarle - they both will be processing their own product.
So either we
- ship it off to China
- A magical hydroxide plant gets built in the next 12 months
- We do a 2nd deal with Tesla
I see lots of battery plants and perhaps one or more of them have a planned hydroxide facility so if anyone has that knowledge please share.
