At local level (repeated across the county), there are businesses who depend on tree felling - to make things even worse, they charge huge amounts and keep the timber after the chop - muh of it for firewood (thought that was a no-no).

Australia had a much bigger amount of rainforests and hardwoods in many now paddocked areas prior to being colonised. Plus the losses due to fires caused by various issues - much of it instigated by man. Now huge areas of land is cleared for solar farms. Smart money perhaps but not very 'lung' smart.
