I don't agree with your assertion that it will come down to choices. Why do I say that? Well governments around the world have been quoted as saying (and implementing laws) they will ban combustible engine vehicles by 2030, 2035, and etc. Where then is the choice for consumers. None. They are mandated.
Also environmentalists keep suggesting that by going electric that it will save the planet. Where does electricity come from? Here is a break down on how electricity is produced just in the USA.

Environmentalists don't like fossil fuels & nuclear. Well that is 79.7% of how the USA gets its electricity now.
How are we helping the environment? And also something to think about, to keep up with the new demand in the future for ev growth, new electric power plants will have to come online. I don't see how wind, hydropower, solar, and etc. can fill this large capacity.
