Lithium to be mined near Val-D'or in October


Australian mining company Sayona announced on Monday evening that it had reached an agreement with L. Fournier & Fils to operate its lithium mine at La Corne, near Val-d'Or.

The four-year contract, valued at $200 million, will allow the mine to resume production of lithium, an essential metal for battery production.

"Operations will begin in October and work will be continuous, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Approximately 120 workers, mostly from the region and the First Nations of Pikogan and Lac-Simon, will be assigned to the operations," Sayona said in a press release.

Another company, Dynamitage Castonguay, has also reached an agreement with Soyona to carry out the drilling and blasting work.

The mining company hopes to re-launch the North American Lithium Complex next winter.

"Sayona is very proud to be able to say that lithium from here, Quebec's lithium, will be back on the market in the coming year," said Guy Laliberté, Sayona's Quebec CEO.

Sayona announced last June that it had raised US$80 million from Piedmont Lithium, a North Carolina company. The agreement provides for Piedmont Lithium to acquire at least 50% of Sayona Quebec's mine production at market prices, with a floor of US$500 and a ceiling of US$900.
