Tesla will vacuum up every oz of lithium in the near term. GiGA-Texas opens in May 2021 and they have over a half million cyber truck reservations. This is more than all of the tesla's sold world wide in 2020. Feeding this beast will take everything that LG, CATL, Panasonic and Tesla can produce and it still wont be enough.
On top of that you have VW who impressively sold 231k electric vehicles in 2020 and will be expanding to the US in 2021. Not to mention GM launching 12 new models by 2022.
Bringing lithium projects online faster may be way more important to Tesla than cash outlay, they will want to lock down supply and keep their first mover advantage. Tesla has a lot of COH and could broker projects with low cost loans to move things along.
