Text book techniques used as a means to persuade and influence a group of people dating back to bloody Aristotle 3500 BC.
Well, that coupled with a bleedingly obvious and desperate need for the ego to be stroked… that deserves special mention (maybe even its own thread, if we’re honest), haha.
Anyway, ego aside, now what do we know are most effective techniques utilised by marketing companies, politicians, sales people, cult leaders etc far and wide to significantly increase their ability to get an audience to absolutely lap up whatever it is they’re trying to sell to them…
Let’s see…
* Exerting dominance and superiority…
* Speaking with confidence and conviction…
* Making your audience feel like they’re “part of something special” (think Waco, Texas)
* Consistency
* Repetition (say, replying to one’s own posts mere moments later to further push a point)
* Scarcity - (now I am only new here, but I would bet my bottom dollar old mate just disappears for large chunks of time… despite otherwise punching out 10,000 words on a daily basis) This one is a classic, widely used in the marketing world. Think Birkin bags, the day the new Apple iPhones are released and the line ups around the block.
* Leveraging off the information gap
* Injecting humour
* Inclusive language and behaviour “we” and “us”
* The “but you are free technique”:
Now this one is incredibly simple but highly effective and one of the most commonly tools by those trying to manipulate or influence the opinions of others. Anyone actively trying to influence your opinion will almost always wrap their spiel up with something along the lines of “But I’ll let you be the judge” or “Let’s wait and see, shall we?” - so simple, yet increases the effectiveness by 100% - hence being so widely used amongst those trying to sway the way you think.
I could go on and on and on… but at risk of losing any right to make fun of the A4 page of… facts… information, data, speculations etc being spat at us with such intensity this past week… coinciding with the sudden shift in market activity that we otherwise hadn’t seen in several months (Groundhog Day for how long was it… since September?)
Oh oh oh, one technique I’d be amiss not to include… especially in this scenario where communication is limited purely to that of the written kind…
Anyone actively trying to sway the opinions and actions of a group of people, unable to rely on the usual various non verbal tactics key to building a rapport and manipulating a person, if worth their salt, wouldn’t be caught dead forgetting to play this card:
Old mate doesn’t happen to have some physical or medical illness or ailment or something of the like that would garner sympathy that has shared with you all, despite otherwise not sharing anything which is personal in nature?
