The case of the Ford Pinto was a similar legal problem. By memory Ford knew they had a dud car that tended to explode in a collision due to faulty engineering near the fuel tank. But decided to take the risk and try and keep it quiet. When caught out the beans were spilt that the exec were trying to save money and enrich their purse. Unsure what TSLA are doing about this problem..
