pretty sure they were able to do that because they're mostly not holding long short positions, they use the stock to day trade the pants out of it. probably close out at the end of each day.
there's not 800m loaned and sold shorted shares sitting there right now looking for the chance to cover. most of these dudes can cover tomorrow off market by just returning them.
