In 2016 there was 28 GWh worth of battery energy produced worldwide. 16GWh out of that was made in China.
In 2018 there was 100 GWh produced worldwide.
In 2020 there was 767 GWh produced worldwide and still around 75% was made in China.
To put that in context, 767 GWh is the equivalent of one day of energy generation in Australia.
In 2023 battery production is set to surpass 1 terawatt-hour for the first time and by 2030 it is expected to reach 4.7 TWh.
Lithium demand will be huge. Battery chemistry can change over time. All the raw materials in the battery can be replaced with the exception of lithium, unless another element can be added to the periodic table.
