I have been tracking several pieced of data related to short positions and it feels to me like the 30c shorts have mostly rolled off and been replaced with smaller and smaller buy ins. This data set covers from Jan-16-2023 til today. Each day I grab the number of new shorts added and as you can see since mid-January, there are some 725 million new shares shorted. This indicates to me that people taking out a short position trade them out pretty quickly and then rinse / repeat.

Since January there have been

137,404,116 shares that were borrowed above the 24c level
149,895,399 shares that were borrowed between 22c and 24c
and
438,087,150 shares that were borrowed below 22c

With higher interest rates, I doubt that much of the red or yellow are in the money, which leaves around 600 million shares that are not in a winning position, if price starts heading up they would likely exit to limit the loss.
