I'm not disagreeing with you. Meritocracy is a good thing and hiring a person solely based on gender with disregard to ability is foolhardy. But when you see a board that is 100% male is that a case of the lack of candidates or something about the board not looking hard enough for people of merit? 100% male board is a red flag for me (and I'm male).
There's also a question of aptitude. Ability comes with experience. It's equally important people with aptitudes are given opportunities to develop the skills to gain the abilities to make the board.
Working Girl (1988). This ain't no new thing.
100% male board suggests to me that lesser abilities are being accepted instead of looking for talent more broadly.
