In theory (theory only as I've never gotten my hands on the PCM mattress) the "heat" problem is mainly during the time you are falling asleep on the mattress, that is the heat is making uncomfotable enough to stop you falling asleep, hence any cooling/delay in heating up would be beneficial as long as the delay is long enough to cause you to fall asleep comfortably?
All in theory only and I don't doubt there will be some new fancy tech which they will call as Super Ultra Mega Infinicool(TM) or some such in the future.
