Shaun Smith (ex Nth Melbourne and Melbourne player) just received a $1.4m insurance payout for permanent damage caused by repetitive concussions while playing football.
An insurer never pays unless there’s no other choice and I’d suggest this will set a precedent for other players and undoubtedly there will be other players seeking compensation.
This also follows the CTE diagnosis for Polly Farmer and Danny Crowley.
And this is just in Australia. The US / Canada contact sports and Asian MMA sports are massive markets compared to the AFL / NRL.
The TBI trials are a huge opportunity and this news, while tragic for the families, is the precursor for change & funding for contact sports. It’s wrong that economics is the driver but none of us would be surprised I’m sure.
