TBI - CTEThere's a great research paper by Blaylock and Maroon (2015) - on the web and is a great synopsis / overview
the paper explains the follow on events that cascade from the initial head trauma:- microglia activate and remain in that extended state the more trauma occurs
- these microglia release toxic cytokines, chemokines etc etc ...a range of nasties in the related inflammation......
- continuing neurological chemical imbalances follow displaying increasing expressions causing neurotubule dysfunction
- proinflammatory cytokines combine with glutamate receptors which further degrade and exacerbate this neurotubule dysfunction
'This combination also increases the reactive oxygen and nitrogen intermediates that interfere with glutamate clearance keeping the injury response high. Priming can also occur from insults to the brain like systemic infections, environmental toxins, and latent viral infections in the brain (cytomegalovirus and herpes simplex virus) '
Have a read - its compelling
I don't know how many footy fans watched the Sate of Origin in which Boyd Cordner was allowed back to play after suffering a head knock which is further injurious trauma on top of repeated trauma he has sustained throughout his career (since childhood).....well knowing what the medical community knows and provides to sporting associations in the way of recommendations and advice -
DISGRACEFUL was the only term that adequately describes the NRL protocols that allowed that to happen ...
'duty of care'...mmm - watch for further developments is all I can say without being to controversial.
My opinion only

No doubt in my mind what IHL and the team is researching here has implications and possibilities of a ground breaking nature for all forms of associated head trauma = TBI / CTE
as always hungry for the news flow
all my own opinion -
