IMO, anyone claiming anything in regards to COVID with any certainty (beyond the basics) should be read with a high amount of scepticism - especially politicians - but epidemiologists also as they also have varying opinions.

Sure, previous efforts to find a vaccine for SARS did run into issues, the main one being the outbreak went away - no pharma is going to fund vaccine research on a virus that isn't a problem no matter how promising the research is. With the previous SARS, and as stated by @dyeman, it didn't get past animal testing.

There is a great deal of money and brainpower invested worldwide trying to create a vaccine for this virus. Historically there are fantastic science stories regarding vaccine research and breakthroughs, for example there are some excellent long reads on the Ebola vaccine story that are well worth a read.

I wouldn't write the scientists off yet saying it's impossible - enormously complex yes. I love science and am a half glass full kind of guy, but ultimately no one knows.

There is decent vaccine tracker on the NYT site - https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/science/coronavirus-vaccine-tracker.html

    Good luck to all.
