Schubiak I think that Chrisjan van Wyk did not want to risk his excellent track record on getting projects planned and running. He even did not mention his assignment at EGR on his CV (check linkedin). Might be that he recognized that EGR cannot move as fast as he was used to do his jobs in past assignments. To keep a clean record in his CV he decided to leave EGR.
I was very optimistic when I heard that he joined EGR, but frustrated when he left. Losing a man of this caliber just before granting an SML shows that something is absolutely wrong with EGR. Either SML is more far away than EGR tells us, or the other conditions to get a mine up and running are not given and Chrisjan van Wyk threw the towel when he recognized it.
