This is a very interesting report released by US Dept Energy detailing future demand of critical materials against current production and then carries out an assessment of criticality:
    2023 Critical Materials Assessment (energy.gov)

Magnesium features in it - open as a pdf and search for "magnesium" however note that the search does not pick it up where it appears in graphics.

My reading is that there is a server deficit of Magnesium and in it's forecast assessments reports:
(Note page numbers refer to page number at bottom of each page and not to the Adobe page numbers))
    • page 22, short term 2023-25 it's near critical
    • page 23, medium term 2025-2035 it's critical
    • Pages 61-63 gives criticality assessment(look at China's dominance!)
    • Production graph is an eye opener pages 67-69 of the document.
    • Forecast demands scenario against production graph for Mg at pages 119 and 120.

If you are prepared to hold until the latter of 2020's when the 100,000tpa plant should be operational you should do very very well.

You will also find the report useful if you are interested in rare earths and some of the majors like Copper and Nickel, Graphite.
