There is a large shift in African sentiment towards the West not just in Mali but in Niger, Burkina Faso etc who have fanned the flames in nearby regions. The Africans are tired of their colonial masters of the French and British whom they saw much of their resources pillaged for not much financial gain. Corruption at the top is often blamed on their overseas masters as a ways of keeping the country in poverty and their labour and resources cheap. Have a look at how much Niger are selling their Uranium to the French for with respect to how much the Canadians are getting per pound.. How much control the French have on the budgets of some of these countries is quite an interesting rabbit hole to go down..

So it is not surprising that the Junta's are turning to other countries such as Russia and China for security. With a weakening US dollar, BRICS in the pipeline and the US and EU in a downward spiral it wouldn't be difficult for the Chinese/Russians to convince them they are the best partners going forward. The tides are changing/shifting in Africa and its only going to get worse unfortunately.
