Lithium carbonate prices in China extended their record-high to CNY 592,500 per tonne in November, soaring 118% year-to-date amid surging demand and increasingly tight supply. Demand for electric vehicles continued to support prices for battery input materials. Decarbonization goals in top consumer China drove local governments to pass cash incentives for the purchase of electric cars, contributing to an 83% yearly increase in new energy passenger vehicle sales in September. In the meantime, the Biden administration said it will grant $2.8 billion to US battery manufacturers to boost production, lifting the need for inputs. On the supply side, slower output in salt lake systems in China exacerbated battery manufacturers’ scrap for supplies. Battery manufacturers continued to receive delayed lithium purchases as producers in the Sichuan province run behind schedule due to power cuts in Q3, while Covid lockdowns in the Qinghai province dented the supply chain in the region.
