While we speculate and it could be true, there isn't any real evidence that this is FFX related and not just related to the changing tides in Mali. FFX had a sale lined up which the government blocked in favour of their preferred operator. LLL is coming online at the exact wrong time politically.
The government is heavy handed, but still needs to do this in a way that doesn't spook every Western operator in the country at once, because they aren't in a position to take the whole industry yet. Gangfeng partnership is probably what is keeping this whole thing together right now. I would be surprised if we don't end up selling to Gangfeng, the question is at what price.
Mali think they are on the verge of something big right now, but they are just swapping their 1st world chains for much heavier 2nd world ones, while most likely enriching a bunch of junta leadership at the expense of their people.
