NZ is lucky , we have say 70% hydro. so electricity day and night. But you need an over capacity there IMO to account for the 'dry spells' We also have a fair percentage of wind generation (which looks like it should grow). and now companies are about to install solar farms - a couple just outside Wellington. However much of that is with 'Government influence' if you like. I want to also see solar panel roofs on all new builds and retrospective installation on current building infrastructure - here in NZ.

By the way, we still have a coal plant and much of our economy has been running on coal fired plants for many years such as milk plants , schools and horticultural installations, and hospitals - to name a few. Successive governments have 'dropped the ball' in that regard.

But to answer your question - yes we in NZ will need more batteries. There is some talk about using a large lake at the bottom of the South Island as a battery - ironically the cost is in the billions and guess who gets to clip the ticket in a big way? Government - not saying its an entirely bad thing and could actually be positive (government so heavily involved in the generation sector) , but to me energy generation in a decentralized way should be a top priority, too - such as solar paneling on housing stock owned by the house holder etc and community owned small grids.

A country like Australia may need more battery capacity and so you are right! - this will take some decades to take into fruition.
I think there is a good probability of batteries made with other metals such as Vanadium - coming into the large storage mix...

if a house holder of housing stock were to cease paying rates or taxes one would soon enough be taught a lesson in who really owns the house

more than likely, the one would still be in denial about their position of slaverism.
