I take your point, but I think you have omitted a few other key things here.
1. They make an enemy out of Australia and China.
2. Russians have 0 experience producing Lithium. So do Africans.
3. The tax revenue from the mine, including employment helps fund guns.
4. Your comment seems to insinuate they want to regress, where over the last few decades would suggest they want to progress.
But could they take the mine if they wanted? Sure they could. But what is the probability?
Could Putin use nukes? Sure he could, but what is the probability.
I think you would agree with me that the probability is extremely low. But certainly not 0 as you point out.
