You will notice that Albo is basically creating another bureaucratic department that will consume most of the money. They need it to be hundreds of millions as a fund for project development including speeding up permitting. Doesnt sound like its that 'critical'. Govts spend more than that on toilet paper.
If we have some of the worlds best reserves of critical minerals, then how would $50m in the hands of desk jockeys really help? Its better than nothing but its not like DRE putting 85% of the money into the ground. This will be like putting half the money into paper shufflers hands. It probably cost $3000 for the press release.
If we let govt do these things, we wouldn't get anywhere. Govts always flap on about making jobs here and not importing value added blah blah blah. They neglect to tell you its govt policy, IR laws, high wages, rents, tight labour markets, high taxes, regulations and energy prices that prevent industry from working properly here. Their left hand has no idea what the rights doing across everything. Nice little PR stunt written by a PR department. How about cutting permitting times by 80% if you are serious about getting 'critical' minerals into the supply chain and speeding up decarbonisation.
