Perhaps a perfect fit for VMT, from the AFR today:Australia can work with China on EVs, climate change: Chinese envoy
Andrew Tillett
China’s top diplomat in Canberra has floated jointly manufacturing electric cars with Australia as part of cooperation on climate change, amid efforts by Beijing and Canberra to reset the troubled bilateral relationship.
Addressing the Australia China Business Council’s Canberra networking day, Ambassador Xiao Qian warned against the risk of allowing momentum to stall to improve ties after China ended its freeze on ministerial contact following the election of the Albanese government.
Xiao said talks were underway between the two governments on celebrating 50 years of diplomatic ties between China and Australia, including receptions in both capitals and an exchange of messages between leaders. China has put much stock in this year’s anniversary as an event to mark.
He said climate change, while a threat, also presented opportunities for cooperation between Australia and China.
“We’re a major importer of raw material of separate products from Australia. Isn’t it a good idea to have a collaboration between China and Australia where we can jointly manufacture something?” he said.
“The electric vehicle industry has provided us a very good opportunity we can seriously think about this.”
This also caught my eye - setting up a US-Govt subsidised manufacturing facility in the US (using the cash) could be attractive and straddle the geopolitical divide:
