While I’m not a fan on uranium fueled nuclear power generation the thorium appears to be a far safer option. It has many positives as a fuel source though some of them could better be described as less negative than uranium. These include, consumes plutonium (eg from all those old nuclear powered submarines), produces vastly more electricity for the same mass/volume of waste, the 1/2 life of the waste material is orders of magnitude less , it is relatively abundant, Australia has something like 30% of the known deposits and you can’t build explosive nuclear weapons from the byproducts.
you don’t need to be Einstein to work out that the “no bomb potential” is why almost all the serious research effort has gone into uranium nuclear reactors
