What's kind of unique about the Leigh Creek Coal measures is where and how they were formed. Following is a brief "geological" explanation of some of the things that have or may have occurred to form it.Located at the intersection of the NW - NE branches off the Adelaide Geosyncline it's in a bit of a crunch zone as can be seen below. Of particular interest to me is the NW fault that passes south of the Coal Basins.

This likely formed well after the Flinders Ranges were formed.
This was all part of what may loosely be described as The Wilson Cycle.
The current situation as shown on the Copley 1:250,000 geology map shows how crunched up that intersection zone is.
