I work in high speed/high capacity fibre optic networks. A while ago we had a currency trading company wanting to check the lengths of fibre patchcords on their equipment within data centres - even though data travels over a fibre network at the speed of light (in glass), even a few meters difference in the transmission path length was enough to give them an advantage of a few nanoseconds and beat the next guy.
