Hey @jcmyck, a pleasure to meet another inquisitive mind on HC. Your post raises many complex questions, which I simply don't have the time to address here and now. I will post some Mt Weld information on the laterite weathering profile I found illuminating and not dissimilar to Luni weatrhering profile (from a distance of 3000km lol). All carbs have their own unique mineralogy and weathering profiles etc, but the manganese rich oxide layer at Mt Weld sitting directly above the less weathered Apatite layer looks a dead ringer for Luni's Mn-rich high grade Nb host ore... Metallurgy all hangs on what happens to 'primary minerals' once they have been heavily oxidised, and this seems to be random good or bad luck?
