there was a recent article in the China Post about breakthrough in hypersonic missile tech (tried to paste the link, but alas). big issue is the extreme heat at very high speeds, which limits manoeuvrability and communication. this effectively turns an expensive missile into a dumb rocket, although a very fast one.
The Chinese claim to have overcome this problem with lightweight extremely heat resistant materials using Niobium among others.
the way the arms race is going, China could put a rocket under Niobium $ if they move to restrict supply
