I am not sure a trade war with China is a good idea. The 100% import duties on Chinese EV's to the US and Canada will reduce overall lithium consumption, not increase it. If China wants to subsidise the world's EV's, why not let them? It's not like we are going to forget how to make a lithium battery. I'm pretty sure it would benefit us a shareholders. It would definitely benefit us as consumers. The only people it is guaranteed to harm is the Chinese. And Tesla.
The Chinese scramble to produce their own lithium is understandable given the massive price spike that happened. I don't see anything to suggest they want to permanently replace their entire supply chain, and more than they do for iron or or coal. They are just as prone to overinvestment, and regret, as Australian shareholders are.
