Hybrids make good sense - especially plug-in hybrids.
The hybrids which can act as a battery for rooftop solar are the best - if it was legal! Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV springs to mind.
Not legal in any state to feed into your house (or the grid) except in South Australia. Short sighted political interests abound...
