Europe's first lithium hydroxide refinery opensLithium is needed for batteries in electric cars. There is now a refinery in Bitterfeld that primarily supplies customers that produce in Europe. In Bitterfeld-Wolfen, the company AMG has put Europe's first lithium hydroxide refinery into operation. In future, up to 20,000 tons of lithium hydroxide for electric car batteries are to be produced there. The quantity is sufficient for the batteries of around 500,000 electric vehicles, the company announced. Depending on the market situation, annual production could be expanded to up to 100,000 tons of battery-grade lithium hydroxide by 2030.AMG estimates its own investment costs at 140 million euros, with 5.5 million euros also coming from regional economic development funds. In Bitterfeld, 80 jobs have been created in an initial module. Customers for the lithium hydroxide are cathode and cell manufacturers of batteries in Hungary and Poland.“With the refinery, we are a first mover and are making a decisive contribution to the security of supply of the critical raw material lithium for German and European industry,” explained Heinz Schimmelbusch, Chairman of the Board of Management and CEO of AMG N.V.Lithium hydroxide is an important raw material for the production of batteries in electric cars, he said, and thus for the path to climate-neutral mobility.
