I sometimes see an interesting company, do some research and take the plunge with a few shares (just a small plunge).  Then, before long it seems to be my luck that the share price falls. I can't believe that it's my fault so I start looking around for reasons.

One reason seems to be that the company had a reasonably strong run with its share price and perhaps has attracted the interest of shorters. Well, nothing has appeared yet in ASIC's daily list of shorts outstanding although, to be fair, that list is published with a huge disclaimer as to its accuracy. However, there have been quite small but continuous amounts of gross short sales reported by ASX here:
    https://www.asx.com.au/data/shortsell.txt .

This raises the question: Is the reporting of outstanding shorts by ASIC in error because some one or more entities are forgetting to submit their required reports? Or do the ongoing reports of gross short sales represent just a churning of shorts sold and repurchased?

Can anyone throw any light on this situation please?

For info, these are the recent Gross short sales amounts I have recorded for AL3 (nearest thousand):

    23 January   97
    24 January 295
    28 January 400 *
    29 January 20
    30 January 253

    * Estimated from reported 0.07% on this report:
