There are a number of companies (ASX listed) producing high grade synthetic graphite from a range of chemicals, gases and processes ect. Some of these processes are harnessing renewables and It is pretty exciting stuff.
However;
The issue is scalability;
Currently, the tech and processes (at least from what I've researched) are a little while off in creating synthetic graphite to a commercial scale and low cost to meet the demand and/or future demand for the PSG required for battery anodes.
I've also heard/ read about the trial of mixing natural flake derived PSG and synthetically derived PSG for anodes which have achieved some promising results.
However, for now and at least the foreseeable future (say 10 years), it appears that natural flake derived PSG will be the most cost affective source that will be able to keep up with current and future demand.
All in my opinion of course, DYOR.
Happy Friday
