Great to see the Australian Minister for Resources, multinationals and other community group leaders all mixing it with DC.
Joking aside, everyone is there because the overwhelming consensus is that critical minerals will be the essential components of a low-emissions future. A worldwide initiative and, Australia must do what it can to be at the forefront of it. As Madeleine King's LinkedIn post states that the purpose of the roundtable discussions was, '… how we can develop our critical minerals sector to maximise benefits across the nation.'
The key word being 'maximise'. So, whether it's for electric vehicle motors, wind turbines, solar panels, etc, the Australian government's role is to ensure that we not only capture value but 'maximise' value. Last week at the National Press Club, MP Albo hinted that he'd like to see battery making in this country, including the need to value-add.
Advanced projects should benefit in some way. However, unlike other critical minerals that Australia already produces to some degree, RNU's purified graphite project is a completely new industry that doesn't currently exist. Therefore, we may safely predict that RNU could be favoured for accelerated support because it may be what is required to set the tone for other players to follow – hence why DC may have been invited in the first place (we are inventing a new kind of supply chain resilience). Also, given that it has been over a year since the announcement of our A$185m Australian Government Loan (one of the first to receive such support), the platform is now set for additional initiatives (or whatever was discussed/proposed) to capture value and set the tone for what will naturally follow suit.
These kind of discussions are usually about the next twenty - forty years. Therefore, RNU having a place at the table means that something big seems to be in the air!
