hydrogen for sure will have a place. From a sustainability point of view, 'gold' hydrogen may not be that great. You are still extracting a buried/contained resource and turning it into a greenhouse gas (water vapour).
Best would be hydrolysing your hydrogen from atmospheric water using wind energy on a large scale. I am sure that will happen at some point, hopefully before an environmental apocalypse of the human race
in the mean time, extracting and processing battery minerals in sustainable ways and then using renewable energy sources to charge them seems like another great way to reduce the amount of CO2 we are producing.
