This is essentially a regular lithium ion battery with a "graphene polymer" coating on the cathode end, as stated on CAT's website.

I seems that it may help with temperatures, and charging times, but given that proper graphene is super expensive to make, I'm skeptical, and would say it's probably more of a marketing gimmick.

The price of graphene varies hugely depending on quality though.

It will be interesting to see if they can industrialise graphene as it has so many uses, and now there is bio-graphene, which is made from any carbon form by heating it to 3000C, and waste plastic could be good for this.

Graphene Supercapacitors are also likely, and some manufacturers are using Supercapacitors already in conjunction with batteries for vehicles, for regenerative braking, and high output bursts.

Supercapacitors don't degrade through cycles, and have a higher out put and ultra quick charging times, but wont replace batteries which have a high density constant voltage, long term energy storage, that can be turned on and off.

Who knows, maybe in 10-15 years supercapacitors or solid state will be developed into an alternative technology, but it won't affect the demand for graphite in the near future.
