Households with batteries are being tapped by energy distributors to form virtual power plants.
During peak electricity events such as your summer scorcher A/C bangin' afternoon scenario, the distributor incentivises the battery-equipped household to feed their stored solar energy back to the grid, thousands at a time.
In time, many EVs may also utilise vehicle to grid capabilities, and be another source of grid stabilisation during the morning and evening peaks.
Whilst the overall electricity usage of those driving EVs dramatically rises when they make the switch from ICE, when coupled with solar & batteries, you can still save big on your total energy bills by smartly timing when you charge and discharge.
Expand same on industrial scale with solar PV farms and grid scale battery energy storage systems (BESS)...
And yes you are correct, we are going to need a LOT more solar, battery and wind power to replace the FF generated electricity, as well as cover the EV uptake.
Both BESS & EV battery chemistries are Li-ion graphite anode dominated.
