My concern is its not as good as synthetic.

This depends on perspective on the outcome/requirement for reducing GH emissions. There are quite a few resources describing the differences between synthetic and natural in batteries.

IM(H)O, If the end goal is reduction in GH emissions or reduced costs then natural is needed. If the world reduces refined petroleum/coal (to reduce GH emissions) then pet coke production will also decrease removing the raw material from supply chains to produce synthetic Gr and if the question of product lifecycle is important (recycling) then society needs natural G.

Have a look at these links: battery design dot net and iopscience and
    american battery technology

According to battery design dot net :-

The battery design dot net link (above) cites an article from iopscience which was released in 2016 which was a study of some very specific battery types (LiNi0.5Mn0.3Co0.2O2(NMC532)/(AG or NG) pouch cells). I admit that I am not familiar with newer chemistry types nor do I know where battery technology is going in future.

According to american bettery technology, natural graphite has potential to be more cost effective to recycle.

In a nutshell, there are advantages which depends on your perspective (IMO) and what the future will bring.
