I installed a battery on my house yesterday. If I just use it 'as is' - it will cover its costs in 4 years (5 years with opportunity cost), and will all be cream from there onwards.
Assuming the price of energy stays the same. Which it won't.
However when you start looking at if you got clever, with API's etc - sold/bought with a provider like amber - you could really shrink this payback period.
I look at companies like amber who have just bought ChargeHQ - there's interesting things happening in the technology/demand space that will drive the usage of batteries much harder and ultimately with clever packaging and financial backing, turn these into very viable consumer products. Batteries become as prevalent as rooftop solar, and away we go.
Ranty post - but I feel like we are just getting started with the electrification / EV / BSS for the grid and the consumer. Economics will always drive behaviour and (it feels to me) like we are at a tipping point.
