Since installing two at my house in 2020, my solar powered fully electric house and EV are in credit!
That's no electricity/gas bills for the home and no fuel (other than road trip charging) bill for the car.
It would also increase the re-sale value of our houses.
If you can afford the upfront cost, it is a great investment.
All the woe of late about no need for graphite forgets the whole BESS sector, where extra weight is not a problem*
The touted near-term arrival of solid-state cells will only make their way into high cost, high end and energy intensive EVs.
The scale up will likely take half to a decade, but the cells will still be high end/high $.
The rest of the market will want low cost cells, which will be traditional lithium ion with a graphite anode.
*BESS will definitely go low cost LFP (graphite anode).
Grid scale may get some other technologies like flow batteries, but the incumbent li-ion has a first mover advantage that will be hard to dislodge.
Note Tesla are devoting whole gigafactories to making LFP Megapacks.
Residential also I think will go trad lithium ion rather than the flow batteries, due to the larger size of the flows ruling them out of apartment, inner city and new suburb builds, where McMansions sit just 1200mm from the fence line.
Then you have new emerging sectors that may not have been factored into battery demand scenarios, such as data centres, robots, military...
Perhaps today's news of Whyalla's steel plant going into administration will have the SA government looking afresh at some good news projects to balance the negativity. There's one I know of just near Arno Bay / Bolivar, that's at Final Development Assessment Stage at state level, and been on the Fed's EFA desk since March 2020 awaiting some box ticking
