The G7 investment community is coming for Australia and South Korea!
G7 leaders announce plan to counter China's dominance of critical minerals with a strategy that could see Western allies cooperating with Australia, India and South Korea. source
Key points:
- G7 leaders announced plans to shore up their supply chains with the help of Australia, India and South Korea in a bid to counter “non-market” policies and practices that have threatened the ability of Western countries and their allies to access essential critical minerals and rare earth elements.
- We will create a critical minerals production alliance, a G7-led strategic initiative to stockpile and develop critical minerals needed for defence and technology,” Carney said in a news conference at the conclusion of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alta., on Tuesday.
- The strategy will feature increasing investment, partnerships and infrastructure, including “economic corridors” in emerging markets, to increase the supply and access to critical minerals, including graphite.
- Industry watchers say China has cornered the market on critical minerals largely through a combination of state subsidies, strategic investments in global mining and market tactics that depress prices to undercut competitors.
- The G7’s focus on mobilizing capital for “responsible extraction” in democratic countries with a good track record on labour and environmental standards is encouraging.
Meanwhile, South Korea and Australia build stronger ties. source
