Potentially realising the capital gain could be an advantage if already after 12 month hold and in a year which could see you in a lower tax bracket then future years. But this all starts to get fairly situation specific.
High level, paying tax means you made money, minimising tax is where hidden value can be unlocked.
In the situation Sunny mentions above just make sure the piece of the pie that the tax man wants is available when they come knocking.
