I have alot of friends in this category Wottagunn and I hear your point !
One of the biggest limitations on availability of 4WD EV's has been expenditure on Research + Development in the 4wd space, due mainly to the attitudes of the main players in the 4wd space over the past decade.
Take Toyota for example, they sell 2 of the worlds most popular 4wds Hiluxes + LandCruisers. Their CEO Akio Toyoda has dismissed / belittled / talked down Battery Technology for nearly a decade. Said it was doomed to fail !
Fast Forward to 2021 when Toyota had a lightbulb (Kodak + Blockbuster) moment, they are now planning to Invest US$35 Billion between now and 2030 on battery plant capacity, research + Development into EV's (Who would have thought).
IMO they are now playing extreme catchup to companies like Tesla who are a decade ahead. Both companies could buy a battery pack off Panasonic or LG. The difference is in the Performance + Operation that Tesla have been fine tuning that results in Superior Output.
To answer your question directly, If Toyota didn't have their head in the sand between 2012-2020, you would be able to buy a BEV Landcruiser today ! Toyota along with all relic auto's are beginning to realise you cant just flick a switch on EV performance, output, reliability.... it takes years to fine tune !
